Music at St. Stephen's

At St. Stephen's we perform a variety of music types from Renaissance and Classical music to spirituals and contemporary music.  In addition to the adult choir, there are opportunities for solos, small ensembles, and special children's performances.

Adult Choir

The St. Stephen's Choir is an all volunteer choir.  While most of our singers have had previous choral experience and several have been professional musicians, we welcome all who enjoy singing and have some knowledge of reading music.  We are the only church located within The Ohio State University campus, thus we are blessed to have OSU students and faculty in our choir, as well as adults from the broader community.

The choir sings at the 10:30 service Sunday mornings from September to June.  Our regular rehearsal time in at 8:30 a.m. Sunday morning, with an additional Thursday evening rehearsal approximately once each month.

Join our Choir

Our St. Stephen's Choir is a friendly and welcoming group.  We genuinely enjoy each other and love making music together.  We take our mission to glorify God through our offering of music seriously.  If you are interested in joining the choir, please contact Rich Lewis, organist and choir director, at 614-294-3749 or just come to a rehearsal on Sunday morning at 8:30 a.m.  We do not require auditions.

Instrumentalists

For special services we frequently have an ensemble of instrumentalists from our congregation who join the organist on hymns.  We often use solo instruments during the prelude or postlude.

Children's Music

During the school year, the children in our AWAKE Program for Christian Education prepare music for performance at the 10:30 worship service.

Special Services and Events

Several times a year the choir leads the congregation in Choral Evensong on Sunday evening at 5:00 p.m.  Each fall, we sing at the Neighborhood Services Concert, which brings University area church choirs together for a benefit concert to raise funds for our local food pantry.

St. Stephen's Instruments

During worship services when the choir is not singing a cappella, we use mainly our Schantz Pipe Organ (2 manuals, 22 ranks) and sometimes our recital-quality Baldwin grand piano for accompanying anthems and service music.  We also have a grand piano in our choir room for rehearsal purposes.
