Daily Morning Prayer

Below this short article is a version of Daily Morning Prayer.  It is an updated version of what we were using during the summer months at St. Stephen’s.

Daily prayer is about sustaining a relationship with God.  As we grow in relationship with the important people in our lives by spending time with them, so also by spending time with God in prayer and meditating on scripture we will deepen our relationship with God.  Increasing our ability to allow silence, a time in which God can speak to us, will further enrich our experience.

In addition to this version there are many ways to engage in daily prayer:  Forward Day by Day is a booklet of meditations that take their inspiration from the lessons of the Daily Office.  A free copy is located in the tract rack near the church office …www.missionstclare.org offers the Daily Office with music … if you are familiar with the rosary, include one or two scripture lessons in place of meditating on the holy mysteries … if you time is short, choose one scripture reading and let the others go …stretch your daily prayer through the day, each part being shorter in length.  Begin your day with the acclamation, a short prayer and a psalm.  Later in the morning add a scripture reading.  Include a short time for intercessory prayers around lunch.  Final prayers in the evening…add the liturgical reading from Sunday’s bulletin to the biblical readings …let the Sunday bulletin and its lessons be your daily prayer for the week.  Use the Great Thanksgiving printed in the bulletin as your own litany of thanksgiving … www.anglicansonline.org has many resources for daily prayer …. www.oremus.org provides an easy way to find any passage from scripture.

Daily Morning Prayer

Acclamation

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer. (Psalm 19:14)

Sentences from Scripture

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.  Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy, and my durden is light. (Matthew 11:28-30)

Confession

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Merciful God, we confess that we have sinned, In thought, word and deed, we have not loved you with all our heart.  We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. In your mercy, forgive what we have been, help us to change what we are, and direct what we shall be; that we may act justly, love mercifully, and walk humbly with you.  AMEN.

Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us all our sins through the grace of Jesus Christ, strengthen us in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you us in eternal life.  AMEN.

Venite  (Psalm 100)

Be joyful in the Lord, all you lands;

and serve the Lord with gladness

and come before his presence with a song.

Know this:  The Lord himself is God;

he had made us, and we are his;

we are his people and the sheep of his pasture.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving;

go into his courts with praise;

give thanks to him and call upon his Name.

For the Lord is good,

his mercy is everlasting;

and his faithfulness endures from age to age.

Lessons from Scripture

An Affirmation of Faith

You, O God, are supreme and holy.

You create our world and give us life.

Your purpose overarches everything we do.

You have always been with us.  You are God.

You, O God, are infinitely generous, good beyond all measure.

You came to us before we came to you.

You have revealed and proved your love for us in Jesus Christ

who lived and died and rose again.

You are with us now.  You are God.

You, O God, are Holy Spirit.

You empower us to be your gospel in the world.

You reconcile and heal; you overcome death.

You are our God.  We worship you.

Prayers

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven.  Give us today our daily bread.  Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.  Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil.  For the kingdom, the power, and the glory as yours, now and forever.  AMEN.

Show us your mercy, O Lord; and grant us your salvation.

Clothe your ministers with righteousness; let your people sing with joy.

Give peace, O Lord, in all the world; for only in your can we live in safety.

Lord, keep this nation under your care; and guide us in the way of justice and truth.

Let your way be known upon earth; your saving health among all nations.

Let not the needy be forgotten; nor the hope of the poor be taken away.

Create in us clean hearts, O God; and sustain us with your Holy Spirit.

Collects

Heavenly Father, in your we live and move and have our being:  We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  AMEN.

Almighty and everlasting God, you made the universe with all its marvelous order, in atoms, worlds, and galaxies, and the infinite complexity of living creatures:  Grant that, as we probe the mysteries of your creation, we may come to know you more truly, and more surely fulfill our role in your eternal purpose; in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.  AMEN.

God of work and rest and pleasure:  Grant that what we do this week may be for us an offering rather than a burden; and for those we serve, may it be the help they need.  AMEN.

Other prayers are offered aloud or silently

May the God of hope fill us with all joy and peace in believing through the power of the Holy Spirit.  AMEN.  (Romans 15:13)
